In 2002, Susie
Frownfelter, Spanish teacher at Hamilton was approached to design a program
required for all Seniors. The program, called Senior Project would require
students to create three specific aspects in order to graduate. They were
required to select a topic of interest, write a 5-8 page paper, create a
physical project and then do an oral presentation about their topic.
Hamilton
students began the process during the 2003 school year, and for three years,
they followed the original plan of physical project, paper and presentation.
With the high
demand for technology savvy students, the Hamilton School Board asked to change
the program to incorporate more technology, so the physical project was
removed and changed into a technology project. Jennifer
Wells took over as coordinator. Students selected a topic, wrote a paper,
and created a PowerPoint presentation, a Website or a video about their
topic. 2005-06 was the first year the technology project came into the
program and it worked. The technology these students were doing were
also being done at the college level.
The
program continues this year, but, Hamilton changed the schedule to
an 8 period day in 2007, so seniors will have the course every day for a semester.
With this change, a community service component was added. Students will be
required to complete 15 hours of community service or take a course out of
school time. They also have a chance to job shadow or teach a course
of their own. (Such as teaching guitar or music, etc.)
